A bi-directional communication between gut and brain controls metabolism and regulates energy homeostasis. Disturbances of this system, e.g., in obesity, contribute to many obesity-related co-morbidities that dramatically reduce the quality of life and create an enormous financial burden on public health systems. Hence, basic and clinical research focus on the mechanisms of gut-brain interactions and the components of the system that are dysregulated in metabolic disease. This workshop will provide a comprehensive view of the current knowledge on the role of the Vagus as well as the contribution of peripheral factors such as gut hormones, bile acids, lipoprotein metabolism, gut microbiota and taste stimuli, and their interaction with the central nervous system. It will also include studies and methodologies for leveraging vagal stimulation and other manipulations for the treatment of metabolic disease. Basic scientists and clinically oriented researchers from various disciplines and from all over the world will combine their complementary strengths to advance our knowledge in this important field of biomedical research.
